Target Audience: Nursing Home Administrators, RNs, LPNs, CNAs, Social Workers, Activity Directors, Occupational and Physical Therapist, Dietary, Diabetes Educators
CE Approved: Nursing Home Administrators (5 patient care hours)
Program: Registration 8:30 a.m., Program 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Lunch 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Purpose: engage participants with information and education about common types of behavioral health challenges residents face and ways for Care Staff and Leadership to provide person centered strategies.   During this course, attendees will learn which disorders may be associated with which behaviors, provide case studies (attendees may bring examples as well) associated with various mental health conditions, including mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. Common strategies for managing behaviors such as verbal aggression, physical aggression, sexual inappropriate behaviors, and noncompliance for patients residing in person-centered care environments will be offered.   In addition, attendees will receive impactful education about prevalence of Addiction disorders and ways to differentiate from dementia and other types of comorbid health issues when participating in physician ordered Gradual Dosage Reductions.

Objectives:

  • Summarize 3 mental health disorders and behaviors associated with each.
  • Discuss 4 warning signs for triggers to negative actions.
  • Create a person-centered plan based on a real solutions to dealing with biting, yelling, hitting, etc.
  • Paraphrase  5 behavioral recommendations to deal with aggressive behavior.
  • Recall prevalence and identification of substance use addiction or dependence in senior adults.

Speaker: Cynthia Elaine Baker, LSCSW, LCSW, LIMHP, CSW-Gerontology, Regional Clinical Manager, Clinical Practitioner, and Social Work Training and Development Consultant for Deer Oaks Behavioral Health.   Cynthia earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Missouri in 2001 and first obtained her Licensed to Practice Clinically in 2003.

In addition to providing training to Clinical Staff and Nursing Communities in her Region, she has presented for Leading Age, National Association of Social Workers and Health Care conferences.  Cynthia is an Executive Board Member for Missouri MC5 Coalition for Person Centered Care and Co-Chairs the statewide Education Committee.   Finally, Cynthia has licenses to practice therapy in four states and earned a Clinical Specialty in Gerontology endorsed by the National Association for Social Workers.
