Purpose: Dementia may cause changes in intimacy and sexual behavior which can be a challenge for caregivers. This workshop will explore best practices regarding a better understanding and responses to intimacy and sexual situations with residents who have dementia.
Objectives:
- Distinguish the differences between sexuality and intimacy.
- Provide information to help families/spouses understand the progression of dementia.
- Discuss the resident’s rights.
- Identify sexual abuse.
- Discuss STD’s.
- Share strategies to prepare families, staff, and residents for situations involving intimacy and sexuality issues.
Speaker: Brenda Akers, MSW, Social Worker, Lutheran Senior Services at Meramec Bluffs, St. Louis, Missouri. Brenda has worked as a social worker since 1996. Her passion is working with individuals with dementia.
