CMS New Phase 2 Requirements

Here is an updated list of nursing home mandated in-services and training programs under the new Phase 2 Requirements of Participation.  Essentially there will be 3 components to in-services and staff training under the new regulations.

The first components lists a few mandatory training topics for all employees annually.
These topics include:

  • Abuse
  • Neglect
  • Misappropriation of resident property
  • Exploitation
  • Dementia management
  • Resident rights
  • Effective communications
  • Infection control

The second component discusses the need for annual performance review of all nurse aides to identify potential areas of weakness for further training.  All nurse aides will receive at least 12 hours of in-service and training each year based upon the outcomes of these annual reviews.

The third component is the requirement for annual Facility Assessment.  One of the major components of the Assessment is a listing of resident care needs based upon the current resident population.  The Assessment then goes on to list staff competencies and training required to meet these resident care needs.
